..The
following is a six nights & six day sample itinerary to give you better
idea of what you'll experience at Estancia de los Rios.
Saturday:
An early flight from Santiago will bring you to the Balmaceda airport.
A short 40 minute land transfer will take you to Coyhaique. Here your
pilot will meet you and take you to your private plane. A short 35 min.
flight over one the most scenic areas of South America will bring you
to the lodge's airstrip. At the lodge after getting organized and having
a light lunch, your guide will take you to the river to start a week of
great fishing.
Sunday:
Early breakfast at the lodge then to the river. We usually fish
our way upstream since we use mostly dries and nymphs. The river has a
very healthy population of brown trout and a rich underwater life that
produce excellent hatches. Fish here take the fly eagerly but delicately,
you will have to learn what to look for in order to see fish, your guide
will show you how. Once you've mastered your eye, you will be amazed how
many fish there are...
Monday:
Today we fish towards the head waters of the river running close
to the lodge. After a morning's fishing we'll join the group for a barbecue
or " asado " this will be done in the typical Patagonia style. As the
"Gaucho" ( Patagonian cowboy ) cooks the lamb, we are sampling a good
Chilean red wine. Later after some rest we get ready for more fishing...
Tuesday :
Today we fish a stream South from the lodge, we will drive via
the "carretera Austral "or southern highway ( gravel ) After a morning's
fishing in this dream-like setting, we join the group for a stream side
lunch under the shade of a big "coihue" tree. Later we'll fish further
downstream were the river is larger. Back to the lodge for dinner.
Wednesday :
Today we'll fish a larger river to the west, on our way we will
see a drastic change in the vegetation, we are entering the temperate
rain forest. We will start fishing deep and slow pools and as we fish downstream
the river opens into beautiful runs with gravel beds. Trees climb almost
to the top of the Andes above us. We continue fishing , probably trying
some dries as we approach the evening hatch...
Thursday :
Today's program is spring creeks. Spring creeks require more patience
and delicate work but they can be extremely rewarding because you can
hook very large trout in a gentle and peaceful setting. These waters are
very productive with a good number of large fish ...
Friday :
Today you will go after the one that got away or we will try the
fly you didn't have the last time. In short , to try correcting those
little things that kept you awake the entire week. After you've enjoyed
the morning fishing in you favorite pool, we head back to the lodge. Here
we will join everybody in a farewell lunch toasting to Patagonia and the
blessed one who brought trout to these waters. After lunch a lodge's vehicle
will take you to the airstrip, the private plane will fly you to Balmaceda
airport.
