For years I have been dreaming
about traveling to Mongolia to fish for
the largest salmonid in the world, the Taimen. From the first
time I heard about this destination in the early 90´s I have
wanted to go but there was always a reason to postpone the
trip.
I've decided not to wait any
longer so I contacted Sweetwater travel and spoke with Dan
Vermillion who suggested I should host a trip next year and
invite my friends and clients to join me.
I chose the fall season because
many of my clients that have gone to Mongolia during this
month have had a wonderful time.
Sweetwater has pioneered Taimen
fishing in Mongolia. They operate the
only catch and release fishery in Mongolia and are presently
spearheading a Taimen conservation project on the Ur river.
Their project has been featured on the front page of the Wall
Street Journal and will create the world's first Taimen preserve.
Within the preserve, they run
three different taimen fishing operations. They run small
camps to insure a friendly atmosphere and plenty of fishing
water. Each camp has access to over 75 miles of water. It
is difficult to cover it all throughout the course of a week.
The camps are clean, comfortable,
and well run. Each camp is equipped with a shower building,
dining lodge, and gers. Each ger, known as yurts in the rest
of the world, accommodates two fishermen. They have a stove,
sitting area, ample shelving and two single beds, and they
are huge with18 feet in diameter.
Of course, the trip is really
about the fishing, people and countryside. This is unsurpassed.
The rivers run clear and provide the angler with easy wading
in generally moderate currents. The fishing is done almost
entirely with dry flies.
Last season guests landed fish
up to roughly 60 pounds on mouse patterns. Truly something
that we have to see to believe, so come along !
Their guides & staff are
among the best anywhere. Collectively, they have guided or
traveled throughout most of the fishing world. They all have
at least 10 years of experience in high quality lodges and
camps. More importantly they were all hired for their personal
skills and patience.
The price of the trip is $5,900
for Fall 2011 This price includes
two nights lodging in UlaanBaatar (breakfast included, dinner
not included), transportation to the camps, six and one-half
days of fishing, lodging, and meals. It does not include airfare
to Mongolia, gratuities, fishing license, or incidental expenses
incurred in Mongolia.
Maximum group size; 8 guests
